The threat only transmitted once.
Did you catch it?
Agile and low probability of intercept (LPI) signals appear once and can't be retriggered. This brief shows how gapless, phase-coherent capture and deterministic replay of the real electromagnetic environment turn a once-only event into a repeatable, closed loop test asset.

Inside the brief
-
Why the electromagnetic environment is getting harder to reproduce and what that means for EW test and evaluation
-
The three properties of the modern threat — density, agility, adaptation — and the capability gap each one exposes in legacy test methods
-
Why synthetic generation alone falls short and why an adaptation cycle measured in days breaks library-based test workflows
-
The four non-negotiable requirements: gapless capture, phase-coherent multi-channel, deterministic playback, traceable evidence
Challenges of Legacy EW Test Infrastructure
Validation blind spots
Adaptive and AI-enabled behaviors cannot be credibly exercised under static test conditions.
Scaling friction
External combiners introduce latency, calibration burden, and architectural fragility.
Throughput constraints
Setup and reconfiguration time limit scenario coverage and program velocity.
Qualification risk
Lab conditions diverge from real-world operational complexity.
Lifecycle misalignment
Hardware refresh cycles cannot keep pace with evolving threat libraries.
The signals that matter most are the hardest to catch
Real electromagnetic environments don’t present clean signals. They layer emitters, clutter, and interference simultaneously and the highest-value events are built not to repeat.
- Density and overlap. Modern EW systems are stressed only when multiple complex threats are layered together and reproducing that density is the hardest part of testing them.
- Agility and LPI. Agile radars can change frequency on every pulse; LPI emitters spread energy below the noise floor. These signals frequently appear once and cannot be re-triggered.
- Adaptation. Battlefield counter-innovations that took a month in early 2023 now emerge in 2–3 days. A test methodology built on hand-crafted synthetic libraries can’t keep pace.
